Our Legacy

1937
The Beginning of a Legacy
Illinois Foundation Seeds, Inc. (IFSI) was founded on July 2, 1937, by independent Illinois hybrid seed corn producers. Originally named Illini Corn Hybrids, the organization centralized seedstock distribution and production among its members. The company rooted itself in the common goal to deliver quality without compromise and continues to make this commitment today.

1942
Strategic Partnerships for Growth
IFSI signed a pivotal agreement with the University of Illinois, granting early access to new inbred lines. This collaboration accelerated advancements in seed genetics, solidifying IFSI’s role as an industry leader. It marked a step toward higher quality solutions for IFSI’s customers.

1945
Shifting Focus to Production
Recognizing the growing demand for high-quality hybrid seed, IFSI transitioned to contract seedstock production. From the beginning of this pursuit, IFSI relentlessly focused on hybrid solutions grounded in research and tailored to meet the needs of our dealers.

1960s
Breakthroughs in Sweet Corn Genetics
IFSI launched its Sweet Corn program, capitalizing on the shrunken-2 (sh2) gene’s potential. This advancement set the foundation for creating sweet corn varieties renowned for superior taste, extended shelf life, and quality—revolutionizing the market.

1970s-1980s
Expanding Horizons
IFSI’s research-driven methods and distinct market knowledge increased with the expansion of its research and production facilities. During this time, IFSI also pioneered white endosperm seedstocks and expanded its research and production facilities.

2020–2021
Acquisitions and Root Research
In 2020, IFSI acquired Twin Gardens to increase in-house sweet corn production. In addition, IFSI launched a roots research program after the acquisition of D&D Seeds table beets and Swiss chard. IFSI’s root research program and product portfolio expanded further with the acquisition of Sakata America’s carrot program 2021.

2022–Today
Continued Expansion and Global Production
2022 and 2024 included acquisitions of Charter Seeds and Del Monte’s sweet corn, which further expanded IFSI’s sweet corn production capacity. IFSI continues to the seed industry in global production and sales, offering over 230 varieties of commercial vegetable seeds, as well as breeding programs in sweet corn, beets, and carrots.
